My First Day at Senior High School

Monday, July 15th

Since I was younger, I often imagined what my new school life would be like. I wondered what my teachers would be like and what subjects I would learn. I also imagined meeting new classmates and making new friends. Sometimes, I pictured the classrooms, the school yard, and the activities students usually did at school. All these thoughts made me curious and excited about what my first day at senior high school would be like.

That morning, I felt nervous as I wore my new uniform and prepared my school bag carefully. Then, my parents took me to school. When I arrived, the school building looked bigger than I expected, and there were many new students standing in the yard. At first, I felt shy and confused because I did not know anyone in my class. After that, a friendly student greeted me and introduced himself. We talked for a few minutes, and I began to feel more relaxed. It was truly a moment full of mixed feelings.

The orientation program began in the hall. The principal gave a welcoming speech and explained the school rules. After the speech, we went to our classroom for the next activity. Our homeroom teacher introduced herself and asked us to introduce ourselves one by one. When it was my turn, I felt nervous, but I tried to speak clearly. Fortunately, my classmates listened carefully and smiled at me. Overall, these activities helped us get to know the school and our classmates better.

After the introductions, we played some simple games to know each other better. At first, many students were still shy and quiet during the activities. Soon, we laughed together, and the atmosphere became warmer. The games helped us relax and start talking more freely with each other. Finally, the bell rang, and it was time to go home. I felt tired, but I was happy because I had made new friends and learned many new things.

By the end of the day, I felt much more relaxed than I had felt in the morning. Earlier, I had been nervous about meeting new teachers and classmates in my new school. However, the simple games and friendly conversations with my classmates slowly changed my feelings. I went home feeling tired but happy after making new friends and sharing many small moments together.

Task 1: Identifying the Main Idea

(To learn about the types of paragraph and how to find the main idea, please click here)

1. What is the main idea of paragraph 1?

A. The writer imagined what senior high school would be like
B. The writer wondered about the teachers and subjects at school
C. The writer imagined meeting new classmates and making friends
D. The writer pictured the classrooms and the school yard
E. The writer felt curious and excited about the first day

The correct answer is A because the paragraph mainly describes how the writer often imagined what life at senior high school would be like. At the beginning, the paragraph states that the writer had imagined his new school life since he was younger. Then, the paragraph explains several things the writer imagined, such as meeting new teachers, making new friends, learning different subjects, and picturing the classrooms and the school yard. These sentences support the main idea of the paragraph. The other options only mention supporting details, such as wondering about the teachers and subjects (B), imagining meeting new classmates and making friends (C), picturing the classrooms and the school yard (D), or feeling curious and excited about the first day (E). These details help explain the paragraph but do not represent the overall idea. Therefore, option A best represents the main idea. This paragraph can be considered a deductive paragraph because the topic sentence appears at the beginning and is followed by supporting details.

2. What is the main idea of paragraph 2?

A. The writer prepared the school bag and went to school with the parents
B. The writer arrived at school and saw many new students in the yard
C. The writer noticed the school building looked bigger than expected
D. The writer’s feelings on the first day at senior high school
E. A friendly student greeted the writer and talked with him

The correct answer is D because the paragraph mainly describes the writer’s feelings on the first day at school. At the beginning, the writer felt nervous while preparing for school. Then, the writer felt shy and confused after arriving in the class because he did not know anyone. After meeting a friendly student and talking for a few minutes, the writer began to feel more relaxed. The other options only mention supporting details, such as preparing for school (A), seeing many new students in the yard (B), noticing the school building (C), or meeting a friendly classmate (E). These details support the paragraph but do not represent the overall idea. Therefore, option D best represents the main idea. This paragraph can be considered an inductive paragraph because the main idea appears at the end after several supporting details.

3. What is the main idea of paragraph 3?

A. The students joined the orientation program and followed all the activities
B. The principal gave a welcoming speech and explained the school rules
C. The homeroom teacher asked students to introduce themselves one by one
D. The writer felt nervous but tried to speak clearly in front of his classmates
E. The classmates listened carefully and smiled during the introduction

The correct answer is A because the paragraph mainly describes the orientation program and the activities the students followed. At the beginning, the paragraph mentions that the orientation program began. Then, it explains several activities during the orientation, such as the principal giving a welcoming speech and explaining the school rules, the homeroom teacher asking students to introduce themselves, and the writer introducing himself in front of the class. The other options only mention supporting details, such as the principal’s speech, the introduction activity, the writer’s feelings, or the classmates’ reactions. These details help explain the situation but do not represent the overall idea of the paragraph. Therefore, option A best represents the main idea. This paragraph can be considered a deductive paragraph because the main idea appears at the beginning of the paragraph and is followed by supporting details.

4. What is the main idea of paragraph 4?

A. The students played simple games to know each other better
B. Some students were still shy and quiet during the activities
C. The games helped the students relax and talk more freely
D. The students laughed together and the atmosphere got warmer
E. The writer felt happy after making new friends at school

The correct answer is C because the paragraph mainly shows how the games helped the students become more relaxed and start interacting with each other. At the beginning, the paragraph explains that the students played simple games after the introductions and that some of them were still shy and quiet. Then, it states that the games helped them relax and start talking more freely. After that, the paragraph gives supporting details, such as the students laughing together, the atmosphere becoming warmer, and the writer feeling happy after making new friends. The other options only mention supporting details, such as the students playing simple games to know each other better (A), some students still feeling shy and quiet during the activities (B), the students laughing together and the atmosphere becoming warmer (D), or the writer feeling happy after making new friends (E). These details support the story but do not represent the overall idea of the paragraph. Therefore, option C best represents the main idea. This paragraph can be considered a paragraph with the topic sentence in the middle, because the main idea appears in the middle of the paragraph and is supported by sentences before and after it.

5. What is the main idea of paragraph 5?

A. The writer felt nervous about meeting new teachers and classmates
B. The writer slowly felt more comfortable during the first school day
C. The writer played games and talked with classmates at school
D. The writer felt tired but happy after making new friends
E. The writer reflected on the experience of the first school day

The correct answer is E because the paragraph mainly reflects on the writer’s overall experience on the first day at senior high school. The paragraph begins by describing how the writer felt more relaxed by the end of the day compared to the nervous feeling in the morning. Then, it explains how simple games and friendly conversations with classmates helped change the writer’s feelings. Finally, the paragraph ends with the writer going home feeling tired but happy after making new friends and sharing meaningful moments. The other options only mention supporting details, such as feeling nervous about meeting new teachers and classmates (A), slowly feeling more comfortable during the day (B), playing games and talking with classmates (C), or feeling tired but happy after making new friends (D). These details help explain the experience but do not represent the overall message of the paragraph. Therefore, option E best represents the main idea. This paragraph can be considered a paragraph with an implied (implicit) main idea, because the central idea is not stated directly in one sentence but can be inferred from all the sentences in the paragraph.

Task 2: Identifying detailed information

1. What did the writer imagine about the school environment? (P1)

A. The classrooms, the school yard, and the school activities
B. The teachers, the lessons, and the school rules
C. The classmates, the subjects, and the school building
D. The students, the games, and the school facilities
E. The friends, the teachers, and the daily schedule

Correct answer: A

The correct answer is A because the paragraph states that the writer “pictured the classrooms, the school yard, and the activities students usually did at school.” The other options include ideas that are not mentioned together in the paragraph or are only partially correct. Therefore, option A best represents the correct information from the text.

2. Why did the writer feel shy and confused at first? (P2)

A. Because the writer saw many new students standing in the yard
B. Because the school building looked bigger than expected
C. Because the writer did not know anyone in the class
D. Because the writer felt nervous on the first day at school
E. Because the writer arrived at a new and unfamiliar school

The correct answer is C because the paragraph clearly states that the writer felt shy and confused “because I did not know anyone in my class.” The other options describe situations mentioned in the paragraph, such as seeing many new students (A), noticing the large school building (B), feeling nervous on the first day (D), and arriving at a new school (E). However, these do not directly explain the reason for the writer’s feelings. Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

3. What did the principal do during the orientation program? (P3)

A. Introduced herself and asked students to speak one by one
B. Led the students to the classroom for the next activity
C. Listened carefully and smiled at the students in class
D. Helped students feel comfortable during the first activity
E. Gave a welcoming speech and explained the school rules

The correct answer is E because the paragraph clearly states that the principal “gave a welcoming speech and explained the school rules.” The other options describe actions mentioned in the paragraph, such as the homeroom teacher introducing herself and asking students to speak (A), moving to the classroom (B), classmates listening and smiling (C), and the overall effect of the activities (D). However, these are not the actions done by the principal. Therefore, option E is the correct answer.

4. How did the games affect the students during the activities? (P4)

A. The games made students complete the activities more quickly
B. The games helped students become more relaxed and interactive
C. The games made students feel tired during the activities
D. The games helped students understand the school rules better
E. The games made students prepare to go home earlier

The correct answer is B because the paragraph shows that the games helped students relax and interact with each other. At first, many students were shy and quiet, but later they laughed together, the atmosphere became warmer, and they started talking more freely. These details show that the games made the students more comfortable and active during the activities. The other options are not supported by the paragraph, such as completing activities more quickly (A), feeling tired during the activities (C), understanding school rules (D), or preparing to go home earlier (E). Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

5. What caused the change in the writer’s feelings by the end of the day? (P5)

A. The writer followed school rules and listened to the teacher
B. The writer prepared carefully and arrived early at school
C. The writer completed activities and returned home on time
D. The writer joined simple games and had friendly conversations
E. The writer met new teachers and entered a new classroom

The correct answer is D because the paragraph explains that the writer’s feelings changed due to “the simple games and friendly conversations with my classmates.” At first, the writer felt nervous, but these experiences helped him feel more relaxed by the end of the day. The other options mention events from the paragraph, such as following school rules (A), preparing for school (B), finishing activities (C), or meeting new teachers (E), but they do not explain the cause of the change in the writer’s feelings. Therefore, option D is the correct answer.

Task 3: Understanding Vocabulary

1. What does the word “pictured” most nearly mean in the text? (P1)

A. Drew the school buildings and classrooms on paper
B. Visited the school and saw the place directly
C. Described the school to other people in detail
D. Imagined the school in the mind clearly
E. Remembered the school from a past experience

The correct answer is D because in the sentence “I pictured the classrooms, the school yard, and the activities…”, the word “pictured” means the writer imagined something clearly in his mind. The paragraph talks about the writer thinking about future experiences, not actually seeing or drawing them. The other options are not correct because they refer to actions like drawing (A), visiting (B), describing (C), or remembering past experiences (E), which are not supported by the context. Therefore, option D is the best answer.

2. Which word is closest in meaning to “nervous” in paragraph 2?

A. Worried and slightly afraid about something new
B. Calm and relaxed in a new situation
C. Happy and excited about something new
D. Proud and confident in a new place
E. Curious and interested in new experiences

The correct answer is A because in the context of the paragraph, “nervous” describes a feeling of being worried or slightly afraid when facing something new, such as the first day at school. This is supported by the writer’s experience of feeling shy and confused at the beginning. The other options describe different emotions, such as calm (B), happy (C), confident (D), or curious (E), which do not match the meaning of “nervous” in this context. Therefore, option A is the correct answer.

3. Which word is closest in meaning to “fortunately” in paragraph 3?

A. Sadly
B. Suddenly
C. Clearly
D. Finally
E. Luckily

The correct answer is E because “fortunately” has a similar meaning to “luckily,” which shows that something good happened. In the paragraph, the writer felt nervous, but it was a good situation because the classmates listened and smiled. The other options do not have similar meanings, such as sadly (A), suddenly (B), clearly (C), or finally (D). Therefore, option E is the correct answer.

4. Which word is opposite in meaning to “quiet” in the paragraph?

A. Silent
B. Calm
C. Noisy
D. Shy
E. Relaxed

The correct answer is C because “quiet” means not making much noise, so its opposite is “noisy.” In the paragraph, students were quiet at first, but later they laughed together and became more active. The other options, such as silent (A), calm (B), shy (D), and relaxed (E), do not express the opposite meaning of “quiet.” Therefore, option C is the correct answer.

5. Which word is opposite in meaning to “relaxed” in paragraph 5?

A. Calm
B. Nervous
C. Tired
D. Happy
E. Friendly

The correct answer is B because “relaxed” means feeling calm and comfortable, so its opposite is “nervous.” In the paragraph, the writer compares his feelings by saying he felt more relaxed at the end of the day than in the morning, when he felt nervous. The other options, such as calm (A), tired (C), happy (D), and friendly (E), do not express the opposite meaning of “relaxed.” Therefore, option B is the correct answer.

Task 4: Identifying references (pronouns)

1. What does the word “these” in the sentence “All these thoughts made me curious… (P1)” refer to?

A. The writer’s teachers and school subjects
B. The writer’s classmates and new friends
C. The classrooms, the school yard, and the activities
D. The writer’s first day at senior high school
E. The writer’s ideas about school life and experiences

The correct answer is E because “these thoughts” refers to all the writer’s ideas and imagination about school life, such as teachers, subjects, classmates, classrooms, and activities. The other options only mention part of the ideas, such as teachers (A), classmates (B), or places (C), while option D refers to the future event. Therefore, option E best represents the full meaning of “these thoughts.”

2. What does the word “herself” in the sentence “introduced herself” refer to? (P3)

A. The principal in the school hall
B. The student in the classroom
C. The writer of the story
D. The classmate in the orientation program
E. The homeroom teacher in the classroom

The correct answer is E because the word “herself” refers to the subject of the sentence, which is “our homeroom teacher.” The sentence says that the homeroom teacher introduced herself, so the pronoun clearly refers to her. The other options, such as the principal (A), the student (B), the writer (C), and the classmate (D), are mentioned or related to the context, but they are not the person who performed the action “introduced herself.” Therefore, option E is the correct answer.

3. What does the word “each other” in the sentence “talking more freely with each other” refer to? (P4)

A. The teacher and the students in the classroom
B. The writer and the homeroom teacher in the activity
C. The principal and the students during the program
D. The writer and a friendly student in the class
E. The students who were playing games together

The correct answer is E because “each other” refers to the students who were interacting during the games. The paragraph explains that the students were shy at first, but later they laughed together and started talking more freely. This shows that “each other” refers to the group of students. The other options mention different people, such as the teacher (A), the homeroom teacher (B), the principal (C), or only a pair of people (D), which do not match the context of group interaction. Therefore, option E is the correct answer.

Task 5:
