It refers to a person’s innate knowledge of the rules and structures of a language, which enables them to produce and understand an unlimited number of sentences, even those they have never heard before. This implicit knowledge acts like a built-in guidebook in the mind, helping people form sentences correctly, understand others, and use the right words naturally. Linguistic competence includes understanding phonology (sounds), morphology (word formation), syntax (sentence structure), semantics (meaning), and pragmatics (appropriate use). This concept explains how we effectively use language in daily communication.

  1. Phonology (Sounds of the Language)
    • Explanation: Knowing how to correctly produce and understand the sounds of the language.
